Alvin Curran is an American composer who has been living and working in Rome since 1965.
Together with Frederic Rzewski, Richard Teitelbaum and Steve Lacy, he founded Musica Elettronica Viva (MEV). Curran has built an impressive oeuvre with both solo and mega compositions such as Oh Brass on the Grass Alas for 300 amateur brass band musicians. Inner Cities, a five-hour piano cycle is one of his most famous works, which was recently brilliantly recorded onto CD by Daan Vandewalle (see concerts). Curran referred in a number of works to his colleague John Cage. I' Dreamt John Cage Yodeling at the Zürich Hauptbahnhof', is one of them. But in his installation Gardening with John, he brings a true tribute to the composer. A garden shed with a hoe, a rake, pencil drawings on the wall and a beautiful sound installation with, among others, a smiling John Cage, conversations, and musical fragments.
