HERMITAGE OPENS MODERN WING WITH WORKS BY RUSSIAN MASTER

A major exhibition of works by one of Russia’s greatest modern artists, Dmitri Prigov, featuring an important gift of works donated by the artist’s family and first shown by the Hermitage with great success at the 54th Venice Biennale, will launch the State Hermitage Museum’s new wing in the General Sta Building on 6 November 2012.

Considered to be a father of Moscow Conceptualism, unlike other Russian artists of the period, Dmitri Prigov never left the USSR and therefore initially became known in the West for his writings and poems, that had been smuggled abroad by his émigré friends. In the early 1990s, however, his art started to be shown at art exhibitions worldwide and has grown in stature ever since. Prigov is now regarded as one of Russian Art’s most infuential figures of the last four decades. On 6 November the o cial opening of the permanent Prigov hall will be followed by a symposium on the artist’s work attended by international academics, artists and art historians. is will be the highlight of the week-long celebration, the ‘Prigov Days at the Hermitage’, (1-8 November) featuring public lectures, a new opera with Prigov’s libretto, poetry readings, discussions led by distinguished artists, as well as film shows and concerts in the artist’s memory.
